11 April 1907 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 11th April [1907]. The Campbells & Lord Egerton & the Dss of Buckingham came to lunch– Went out & home to tea. Visit from M. Hulin a Belgian gentleman who is travelling to study & hunt out Flemish art. He wants me to lend the David I have here for an exhibition at Bruges. I refused on the excuse that the pictures are not my property—but that of the nation. He came to Venice on purpose to see a Van Eyck in the possession of the Franchetti family but has not succeeded. I promised to try & help him to do so– I wrote to Dss Canevaro to ask her if she knew how it might be managed. She said she thought I might try with success.
