12 April 1907 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 12th [April 1907]. I telephoned to Mr Hulin to come here at 11 & then I took him in gondola to the Franchetti palace. I asked to see the famous staircase—a nightmare of marbles false gothic & indifferent bas relief. I got the woman who was showing us round into conversation & from her learnt that the picture in question was locked up & the key in the possession of the absent proprietor & we had to go away baffled. Sr Malagola came to lunch & took the Oranmores & Connie to Padua for the afternoon. I went to the Hospital to settle small questions. Took leave of a Spanish boy who has been in hos: 7 months—& a Norwegian 3 months. I went on to the Edens garden where I found Carrie & took a walk round with her. Home to tea & had the visit of Baroness Gagern who is here waiting for the Lonyays who are coming here by motor car. The party returned from Padua by dinner—to wh Malagola remained & then took the party to the French play. I went early to bed.
