19 May 1907 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 19th [May 1907]. The sisters Sarabji left me by a 9.20 train– One for Lausanne & t’other for London– The rest of us went to church all but Connie in the morning. Miss Hallé (R.C.) to her church– Augusta out with her son & friend. After service we went to walk in the Piazza before lunch. At 3 I went to see Angela Reinelt & walked from Hotel Victoria to the Curtis who had invited us all to tea. There was a large party there– Connie joined us with Gweneth & Nora. I was to have come home with B. & Ed: but they missed me & I had to walk to the Traghetto & come home by it. We took a row together to the Lido & landed & walked across to the sea. It was not sunny—but the grey colouring was lovely & we had a restful expedition getting home at 7.30 just in time to dress for dinner. Robert Gregory & Mr Yeats dined. We found him agreeable tho’ rather affected. He talked to me of Browning with great enthusiasm as the greatest mind of the age & of Alfred Austin with contempt—saying he had never read a line of his works. There is something in the way of the man that is not attractive, one being that he does not look one in the face. He is rather unkempt—not soigné in dress—& has awkward manners. He has evidently been spoilt by over adulation.
