28 May 1907 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 28th [May 1907]. Had a long morning at enamelling and finished my 2nd work—a frame for a miniature. Sr Boni the Jeweller in the Piazza came to see our work & we promised to teach his workman. Directly after lunch we went off to the Frari having been invited by Malagola to the opening of the Geo: Exhibition of maps &c there. After we had seen & admired we went down to the ground floor room where Mme Malagola gave us refreshments. The others dropped me at home & went on shopping. At 6 Angela Reinelt called for me & took me out in gondola. We went to the Canevaros & were admitted. Ersilia was in a state of agitation—& tearless. Two nieces & a friend were sitting with her. Her son was also there. I had not seen him since he was a boy. He has been away in Peru some years & now happily is at home to help his parents. Ersilia invited us to go to see the coffin wh we did. It is there in a room full of wreaths & flowers which make the air sickly, the poor woman who took her own life in a moment of madness, four tall candles at the corners—a nun kneeling at the foot. We knelt & prayed– I prayed for the sister who remains & is in danger of also losing her wits– She had not yet cried and is over excited. We left the house much upset—& were glad of a quiet row to recover. After dinner the Malagolas & their friend Signa Gosetti came to see the serenade pass & then went off to the Treves party wh I had intended also going to but excused myself & feeling in quite another mood. Connie & Nora followed the serenade & I went to bed.
