27 May 1907 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 27th May [1907]. So it is true poor Maria killed herself by cutting her veins. It can no longer be kept a secret– The Questore had to be called in & it is openly talked of. I had a lesson in enameling from Nora Hallé despite numberless interruptions—telephone, Trombinis &c &c. Guido Malagola also came to help me to write my invitations to the party on Thursday in honor of the Geographical Society. Shortly before 2 Signor Malagola & his wife came to join me & we went to the opening of the Geographical Exhibition at the Marciana Library now in the old Tecco—& thence to the Ducal Palace to see the famous map of the world still kept there. There were a good many members of the Congress there. I made acquaintance with the Librarian Sr Fratti the secy &c & they were all kind & complimentary to me & the secy was in despair because I had not been invited to the inauguration ceremony! I could not openly confess to him my pleasure at the omission! On returning home I had a long talk with Mme M. about the situation of her affairs. We agreed she should do nothing but should stick as much as possible to me & keep up heart—leaving things to time. Guido was still at work doing my invitations & afterwards we had tea & rested—& then I went out with Connie & Nora for a row. Went to the Eden’s garden & saw the roses now beginning to go off a little, looked in to the Hospital & home to dinner. It being a splendid moonlit night we went for a row after dinner. Lovely—warm & pleasant.
