26 May 1907 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 26th [May 1907]. Connie & I went to morning service. Olga M. came to luncheon & later she & Connie went together to Mrs Humphrey Johnston’s to tea. Malagola came to talk over all the arrangements for the geographical congress wh begins tomorrow & for wh I am giving a party on Thursday next. At 6 Angela Reinelt fetched me & we went for a row to the Giardini publici—got out there & went to a café & sat & had rinfreschi. We could not get in to the best café where the Exn precincts as it was late & no tickets were to be had & one was not even allowed in to the café! It was a real hot summer’s evening & very enjoyable. As we came close to the house we passed Baroness Mayneri who called out “Have you news of Maria.” We did not understand what she meant but guessed it a misfortune. After dinner Connie & Miss Hallé went out in gondola. As I was writing Giuseppe (my butler) came in to say that a man had called to say that Maria Cozzi was dangerously ill. At such an unusual message I suspected that she had made away with herself. I ran up stairs to the telephone & put myself in communication with Angela & she confirmed my idea saying that on her return to the hotel she had found some of the Cozzi family waiting to tell her the horrible truth. It is a doomed family– The father & mother had made away with themselves– Two or 3 years ago the brother jumped out of the window & died afterwards in a mad house & now poor Maria– One trembles for the mind of Ersilia who is married to Duke Canevaro! Poor things!
