30 June 1907 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 30th [June 1907]. This morning we put out our flags & hangings to honor the remains of old Venier who after over 300 years has been moved from Murano. Sra Malagola & Cssa Persico came to see the procession up the Grand Canal from my windows. It was but a small affair the barge containing the coffin was dragged by a steam launch—a ridiculous anomaly wh ought to have made the old hero writhe in his coffin. There was nothing impressive or picturesque—perhaps it may have been me so in St Mark’s where they took him to be blessed before putting him into his new grave at St Giov. e Paolo. After seeing this I hurried off to church. It was a very hot day. At 4 I went to the Eden’s garden & had tea there & bid them “bon voyage” as they are leaving for Belluno tomorrow to spend the summer. I looked in to the Hospital where I found Sister Chaffey & the invalid sailors singing hymns & so I came home. At 5 Canon Ragg came to dine with me & went afterwards to the service at the sailor’s institute– After that went for a turn in the cool & found a serenade going on in the Barino in honor of old Venier & so home to bed at 10.30.
