1 July 1907 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 1st July [1907]. My sixty fourth birthday. I am getting an old woman! I went to lunch at the Public garden with Angela. I called for her in my gondola at half past twelve. It was a very hot day but out there it was a little cooler. Sr Fritz (Angela’s nephew & secretary) met us there & lunched with us. We came home directly after lunch. At 4 I went off to the hospital to meet the Ingeniere Radaelli to look over the building & altering work done there and to get him to have the finishing touches put to it. It really is nearly finished but the Italian mind is such that they will not “finish & have done with it” wh is pain & grief to the English nature. However Radaelli promises to see to it at once. Vedremo! I returned home to be ready to start out again when Angela called for me at 6.30 & we went again to the Gardens & partook of a sirop. In the evening I remained at home but sent out the servants in gondola to give them a treat for my “festa.” Old Pasquale remained to take care of the house. I played some games of patience before going early to bed.
