2 July 1907 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 2nd [July 1907]. I had a small boy brought to me for a model & I worked at the little figure of the fisher boy all the morning. It blew hard all day a sort of “bora.” At 4 I started off in gondola & had got a little way down the Grand Canal when I met the Hattons & remembered that they had appointed to come to see me—so I turned back & they came into this house & had tea with me. She brought with her Mr Marquay & his niece Miss Barbara Villiers, daughter of my old friend George Villiers (Lord Clarendon’s son) who was a partner of mine when we were young & his sister now Lady Ampthill was my great friend. He (George) has been dead some time. His girl did not resemble him the least. She seemed a nice girl. Soon after 6 Angela called for me. It was too windy to go to the Gardens so we took a turn towards Sa Chiara. Angela was nervous & out of sorts & unhappy at the world in general. Canon Ragg dined with me & a few people came in the evening—but not many. There was a lull in the wind at sunset but it got up again in the night.
