24 July 1907 — Mezzaratta, Bologna
Wednesday. 24th [July 1907]. I was sitting in the garden chatting with Donna Laura & embroidering when Sr Faccioli made his appearance. He had just returned from La Parretta, not very well & rather pious. He remained the day here. After lunch, as usual, after sitting awhile in the little lazzietta we separated & retired to our rooms. Count Taverna had left by an early train for Salso Maggiore. I had a very gloomy letter from Connie as to Ivor’s state of health advising me to return to England & I had almost decided on starting on Saturday when by the 3 o’cl post came an improved account from Blanche advising me not to come as it wd be of no use—as no one could see him. I was immensely relieved on both accounts. We met at tea at 4 o’cl & at a little after 5 I went off to the train to leave by 6.40 for Venice. In the train was Ct Cittadella Vigodorzere of Padua who was returning from Rome where he had gone as a senator to vote on the Nasi affair. He paid me a visit in my compartment & described scene. He said that after the voting & decision the President had appealed to the senate to keep the result secret—but already some members had left the house not having been told to be silent & there was no possibility of secrecy. We reached Venice about 10. Giuseppe met me with gondola & one gondolier. The head man had been drunk since I left & had to be turned off. I found a grand serenade going on on the Grand Canal wh passed by this house just after my arrival. Tea & bed—& glad to be home–
