9 August 1907 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 9th [August 1907]. The employé came from the Banca Veneta & laid £1000 in notes on my table! I signed the other 3 bills “per avallo” & the whole dire deed is done & after 2 visits from Marzollo I hope I have done with him. The Genl called after 4 & took me out. We went to the Eden’s garden & sat some time overlooking the Lagune in the cool. The Genl told me many of his old stories of people he had known in his palmy days when he was the darling of society. I paid a short visit to the hospital to bid Sister Hoyllar good bye as I leave Venice tomorrow. I meant to have stayed till Monday but between heat & fatigue & worry I felt I must be off & could stay no longer. Captain Belmondo came to dine with me. His wife is away in the country.
