31 August 1907 — Abano | |
Saturday. 31st [August 1907]. This being the jewish Sabbath Bianca would not work so we talked & I read her some English poetry. She is very intelligent & well educated. She told me that her work at home was to take care of the linen & to keep all the accounts. She is going to rise very early in the morning now to study the old letters wh have fallen into her hands & wh she will perhaps publish. She evidently has read much & is up in Italian & other poetry. We sat in the garden at 4 after having had afternoon tea in my room & soon after we went to the garden. Cav. S. Arbib came from Venice to fetch Bianca home. We took a turn to see the hot springs wh are 200 yards from this house. The water wh rises is boiling hot & the ground hot to one’s feet. It is curious to find such volcanic traces in the plains– Tho’ the Euganean Hills all round show the work of incipient volcanos. The Arbibs drove off to Padua when I went in to dine at ¼ to 7. I quite miss Bianca. She is so gentle & good & intelligent. Played Patience till bed time. As one has only a small composition candle to sit by of an eveng one cannot read after dark. One is so used to having electric light everywhere now a days that it seems very old world to be reduced to a candle for light! | |
