2 October 1907 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 2nd October [1907]. I remained in bed till late. Sister Chaffey came to massé my knee before I got up. Mr Montalba came to see me & was also admitted in French fashions. After lunch I went out to see Angela having first interviewed Teresa Gironi whom Angela wants in Nov. as a companion– She came to say that she could not manage it but Angela was so set on having her that I had to send the gondola to bring her to the hotel & we over persuaded her to manage it. I came home to tea up in the studio. It was a wet day so I had no visitors & was able to rest. Lady Stirling came to dine with me. A nice pretty woman—& unhappy. After her 1st husband Lord de Lisle died she married Sir Wm Stirling & they could not get on so she lives alone in London. I found we had many mutual friends & oddly enough she is great friends with Lady Rodney No 2—Corise’s successor whom she says is a charming woman & very good & has quite reclaimed Lord Rodney. One ought not to doubt a sincere repentance—but can it be true? Lady S. says they have a school for waifs & strays & live only for good works & they are poor & work hard– That Lady R. is a beautiful woman & very good & high minded & has given up everything for the sake of right & good & can manage Rodney in a way Corise never could. Poor little Corise! He has ruined her life & happiness & does not seem to deserve any happiness himself– But God is great. What will be the end of it all?
