1 October 1907 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 1st October [1907]. Angela Reinelt sent word she is here at Hotel Victoria. I went to see her after lunch. She has a fit of the gout—& we had a good laugh at being both so lame. I having still to use a stick. I had a few people to my reception in the eveng. Mrs Marrable is staying in Venice & she brought with her her brother in law an old Judge Philbrick K.C. a delightful old gentleman who was very pleased to tell me that when Henry stood first for Southwark he had been on his committee and had contributed to his success as M.P. He is a little red faced round about little man—with courteous manners & making polite speeches. He is also a good florist & was delighted with the big white moonflowers which I had in every room. As they only come out at sunset Pasquale picks them to adorn the rooms at night & they look lovely & smell sweet. They are planted outside the house in the window boxes & are growing there freely. One sees as many as 50 or 60 every night at sunset. The old Judge talked about the Nineveh Porch at Canford & was surprised & delighted when he learnt that Wimborne is my own brother. He said also that he had decided to leave Venice today but delayed his departure 24 hours in order to come to me tonight. It is refreshing to talk to anyone who keeps the memory of Henry so green.
