7 October 1907 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 7th [October 1907]. The Gd Duke & Dss Vladimir of Russia had arranged to come at 10.30 to see the pictures here. As I am now quite lame & could not stand about I wrote & begged Sr Malagola to come & help me—& to show them round wh he did. I was carried down to the long hall & managed to limp along with the help of Henry’s stick—but had constantly to sink on to a chair. The Gd D. & Dss seemed pleased at coming—& he is supposed to know something of art & to be at the head of the Galleries in Russia. She asked me about Alec Gordon Ross whom they had had to teach their children English & with whom they had not been very pleased. I said he was very eccentric & had made a bad marriage with a singer. She said she had declined to patronise Mr Ross’ concerts & I could not wonder– Alec was Henry’s godson but was no joy to anyone & has many of the defects of the Duff Gordon family his mother being one. It is a pity—there must be a crack somewhere. The Gd Duke was accompanied by a nice old gentleman—Bruckersdorff cousin of Marchesa Guiccioli who says he often comes here & promises to come & see me again some day. I was carried back to the studio after they left and remained till after dinner when I was taken down & received my friends as usual on Tuesday evenings.
