25 October 1907 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 25th [October 1907]. It was a very wet day but I had to go out as I promised to lunch with the Curtis. This I did being carried up their outside staircase by their gondoliers. We had a nice chat & Lady Helen Vincent came in. She was looking as beautiful as ever—a lovely type of aristocratic English woman & beautifully dressed. I went on from the Curtis to see old Genl de Horsey who leaves tomorrow for Hyères where he has a villa. The poor old man looked so forlorn. His house empty of all home life comfort & his boxes standing there ready corded & sealed for the journey. He was as gallant & as ever. I did not stay long with him as it was pouring & damp & I was anxious to get home & take to my sand bag cure.
