30 October 1907 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 30th [October 1907]. Mr Montalba came early to take over the rest of the money for the Hospital wh had come to my hands since yesterday. Sister C. also come & accompanied me to the station to see me off by the 9.55 train for Rome. Cav. Arbib & his Bianca, Malagola, & the Consul were also there. It was a very full train. There was an Italian lady & her maid in my compartment who was very friendly & loquacious & by the time we reached Rome at 10.40 we had exchanged cards & made friends. She is a Neopolitan—of the name of Capuzzi née               . The floods are out all along the line till Bologna. It was very sad to see & it rained nearly the whole day– I am very sorry to leave Venice & every body very kindly said they wd miss me & wd feel like my orphans but I know that I want change of air & rest of mind as I have worked pretty hard—altho’ I seem often very idle at home. My rheumatic knee & the baths I have taken to cure it have pulled me down so I think I am right to go. At Rome I was met by the grand Ambassador footman & equipage & soon found myself sitting in the Embassy drawing room having a grateful cup of tea & talking to the dear Egertons & their cousins Mr & Mrs Charles Egerton. She is née Brassey & reminded me that she had come to the Embassy at Constantinople with her parents when they were travelling in the “Sunbeam” & she was quite a girl.
