4 January 1908 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 4th [January 1908]. Arthur Du Cane paid me a visit in the morning otherwise I had a quiet morning—wrote & worked. After lunch I walked out & went to the private view of the Winter Exhibition of the Academy. There I saw many people I knew & too many were there to make it possible to see the pictures; so I just glanced round & saw there were many things one must go back & see quietly the Hogarth’s—the Hooks of wh there were a room full each—many [illegible words] &c—& a fine Moroni portrait head & shoulders. I left at 4 & hired a taximeter motor & went to Addison Road to see Sir Edward Poynter who is in bed after an operation to an eye for glaucoma. Mr & Mrs Hugh Poynter received me. She is an American & they met each other out at Constantinople where he is secy to Sir Adam Block. I got home at 5.30. Mr Charles Hallé came to see me & sat some time. I dined alone.
