11 January 1908 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 11th January [1908]. Just after lunch Mrs Whitaker telephoned to me to ask if I would like to dine with her & she fetched me at 3.15 & took me to Richmond first we went to Mr H. Cook’s house where she found the master of it happened to be there & he himself showed us over his gallery of pictures of wh there is a large collection. Velasquez, Murillo, Rubens, George Poussin &c. Most of them seemed much overpainted & varnished especially the Italians, though amongst them there seemed some good things. We went on to see an old lady of 91 a Miss Cochran a friend of Mrs Whitaker’s. Miss C. is nearly blind & very deaf but very lively & interested in everything. A lady she has with her as companion gave us some tea & told me how vigorous Miss C. still is & how she had been to Scotland last summer starting at 8 a.m. & arriving at 7.30 p.m. & not tired when she got there. Her sister had been Lady Milne, wife of the Admiral. Miss C. must have been handsome in her youth & amusing & lively. We got home at 6 & I missed a visit from 2 friends who had promised to call on me after 5! It froze all day & people were skating as we passed through Richmond Park. It was bright & sunny.
