17 January 1908 — 3 Savile Row
Friday. 17th January [1908]. I took my 7th bath & was very tired after it so that I did nothing but read in the morning. Nellie & Charlie came to luncheon. Lady Bessborough (the Dowr) came to call soon after 3 & had a talk with Kate who however had to leave at 3.30 to take the train back to Lutterworth. Her son Monty was gazetted today in the Times as Rector of Lutterworth in his father’s place. Nellie came in to tea & we sat together till dinner when Charlie joined us & directly after we 3 went off to the ball given by the firm Clémence & Savile (Nellie) to their 60 work girls at the Cavendish rooms in Mortimer St. The girls were very nicely dressed & were very orderly. They were allowed each of them to invite one young man—& each man was in evening dress & all were enjoying themselves. We only stayed abt an hour as Charlie is going off by the midnight train to Greenock to start for Marseilles by the Line on business of Fortnum & Mason & will be away a fortnight.
