31 January 1908 — 3 Savile Row
Friday. 31st [January 1908]. I got up only in time for lunch to wh I had invited Blanche & Gweneth & Dr Collinson & Mr Dudley. After lunch Dr C. played the piano & sang to us Irish songs wh delighted Gweneth. I did not go out. Had a visit from Nevil Gordon & also from Mrs C. Balfour. Nellie returned to tea at 5 which we had in the drawing room– Baby came down after tea & we were sitting talking when the door opened & in came Charlie Wyld returned from his trip to Marseilles. I left him & Nellie to dine at home & I went off to dine with the Duke & Duchess of Somerset—where I met Lord & Lady Kilmorey, Sir J. & Lady Slade, Archdeacon & Mrs Wilberforce & Capt. Beaumont. The Archdeacon took me in to dinner & Sir J. Slade sat on my right. He had been military attaché at Rome & we talked much about Italy & touched on Venice at wh he asked me if “Lady Layard still lived there” I exclaimed “but that is what I am” & we were both amused. The Archdeacon talked in a very interesting way of India & the religions of that country & said that he was persuaded that we all worshipped the same great Creator tho’ we had other ways of expressing it & that he had great sympathy with the Hindoos. After dinner had some talk with Lord Kilmorey who says he has lived 3 years at Vienna by wh I conclude he is a secy of Embassy. Lady Slade offered to come & see me & was friendly.
