3 February 1908 — 3 Savile Row
Monday. 3rd [February 1908]. Up early & went off to the bath at 10. Home by 11—& went to bed till lunch time as it is supposed to be right to rest after the treatment. Nellie & I alone at lunch. Blanche telephoned to say she wd take me out shopping in her motor car & she sent it at 3.30. She took me to order a tea gown & then for a bonnet & I rejoice to think my shopping is thus finished for the year. We called at Middlesex Hospital to fetch Gweneth who was there amusing some of the sick children & she went on with us. At 4.30 they dropped me at home. Mrs Silver came to call to tell me that the people’s restaurant had been a failure & she had got in debt £70 for which I am liable. She suggests getting up an entertainment in London but I object to this & suppose I shall have to pay. It is entirely Mrs S. bad management which brought all this about. Old Lady Bessborough & May came to tea also Nora Hallé & Dr Collinson who asked me to try & help him to get the living of St Mary’s Seymour St N.W. wh is vacant & in the gift of St Paul’s. I promised to try & do my best to help. Charlie & Nellie both in to dinner & C. went out directly after dinner on business. The news from Portugal is scanty. The account of the poor Queen is heartrending. It says she sat all night between the bodies of her husband & son with a hand on the face of each. Poor soul!
