13 February 1908 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 13th [February 1908]. Mrs Rate came to see me in the morning. Luncheon party at home—Mrs & Revd Ady, Mr & Mrs Derriman (friends of C. Wylds), Mrs W. Hanson, & the Wylds. Charlie had an electric motor brougham brought round for me to see whether I would like to hire it when I return to town– I settled to do so. We went in it to Cork St where Nellie met Mrs Adanes who came to order clothes. I took a walk up Bond St to Cav. Square & up Harley Street where at No 50 I called to see if Dr Herring was at home. He was there & glad he said to see me– I never can forget his kindness during Henry’s last illness & death. I found him grown stouter but little changed. I had not seen him for a year or two. He told me how Sir Henry Thompson, his former master had died– He went for a long motor drive—on his return he said he was tired– He went to rest—& slept—& never woke. It was a blessed end for a man who feared death & was impatient in illness. Lady Thompson died 6 months after– She was a kind noble hearted woman. Mr Herring wished to introduce his wife to me so I waited to see her & she offered me tea. Then I had to walk quickly home to be there by tea time (5). Nora Hallé came to tea, Bee Eliot & Css Contardone née Durant—& Arthur Du Cane. The Wylds went to dine with Blossett & Genl Alderson. I dined with the Bessboros’ in Cavendish Sqr—a parti carré with Gweneth.
