15 March 1908 — 3 Savile Row
Sunday. 15th [March 1908]. Breakfasted in [our] rooms & Augusta Gregory & I walked down St James’ Street to attend service at the Marlboro’ Chapel Royal at ¼ to 10 & were back before 11. The P. & Pss of Wales 2 little boys & the girl were there. The lesson fm the Bible beautifully read by the Sub Dean Sheppard of Israel blessing his son is to me always very affecting. Sat talking to Augusta on our return fm church till 1 when Blanche came to see me & I said I wd go & see her later. Augusta, Eda & I lunched together. At 3 Augusta went out & I sat with Eda arranging little matters for my packing. At 4.30 Sir Herbert Thompson called & gave us some interesting descriptions of Egypt & its history. At 5 Mr Gaston Sargent came to tea when he left I walked to 17 Cav. Sqr & sat a little while with Blanche & then walked to Bruton St to call on Adeline Dss Bedford. As I got to her house the door opened & she came out. I said I would accompany her & we walked to 35 Park Lane when I left her & walked home– It was 7.15 when I came in so I dressed for dinner. Eda had gone to evening service but returned just after we sat down to dinner. Adeline told me this afternoon that she had heard that Sir Nicholas O’Conor our Ambr of Constantinople is dying out there—heart failure after pneumonia. It is very sad. He is still young. He came as 3rd secy to Madrid while we were there & I got to know him very well. He engaged himself to a Dutch girl & she jilted him & I used to do my best to console & comfort him. She was a Protestant & he a fervent R.C. so that it might not have been a success. He afterwards married a niece of the Duke of Norfolk & I fear had not been very happy as she was so queer & at times out of her mind it is said. I sit & think of the scene in the house & rooms I know so well at Pera & think of the desolation of the poor wife. I hear her aunt Lady Mary Howard has started off to be with her.
