18 March 1908 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 18th March [1908]. Breakfast at 9. Connie called me up on the telephone in a dreadful state of mind about her son Ernie who she found was in a dreadful hole again. I soothed her all I could & said I would try to go & see her in the afternoon. I wrote letters & arranged papers &c. Cornelia & her son Oscar came to lunch at one & Aline Lambton also. Nellie & Eda made up the party as Augusta Gregory & C. Wyld were out. We had an animated amusing discussion about suffragettes & womens votes. Three of us for & three against it. Cornelia went away at 2. At 3 Elaine looked in for a moment & then I went out in the brougham to Onslow Gardens to see Connie whom I found very unhappy. I soothed her as much as I could & tried to persuade her to go out– At first she declared she could not do so but by degrees became a little pacified & said she wd drive after 4. While I was thus employed I sent the carriage to fetch Nora Hallé & then went with her to see Princess Louise Augusta in Queensbury Place where she has got a very small but nice house. I bought of her a small bit of her enamelling to give to my dear Queen Margherita. She took us up to her studio at the top of the house to see her work shop. There we found her master who evidently helps her with much of her work & fused a piece of her work to show us how it was done. At ¼ to 5 I left there & went home. Directly after I got in Gertie Ker Seymer came & Mrs Ball Greene (late Mrs Val Prinsep)– Also Lady Slade & then Blossett Alderson– The Wylds & Eda dined out & so did I leaving Augusta alone at home. I went to dine with Evelyn Stanhope at 20 Gros. Place. She & I quite quietly alone. We were girl friends together & ever since our marriages had never had a real quiet long talk & we had much to say– I got home at 11– All were at home but Charlie & he came in & talked in my room & now we are all in bed—I writing this & must go to sleep for I am very tired.
