29 March 1908 — Rome
Sunday. 29th [March 1908]. I drove to the English church with Sir Edwin & we came away before the sermon. The Egertons went to the races after lunch & I had a quiet afternoon. Donna Laura Minghetti came to see me & sat a long time helping me to invent new combinations of colour for Venetian bead necklaces. I took her for a turn round the garden here & picked for her some of the splendid violets of which there are such quantities. She left abt 4– At 5 o’cl tea there were many people—Dr Palmer & Mme Nevada Palmer & their daughter Mignon who has become an opera singer & came out here in the Barbiere de Siviglia this winter with great success. She seems a nice simple girl. With them was their friend Miss Kelso of the contralto voice from the Isle of Man. Later Donna Bianca del Gello came—looking frail & thin—always the charming woman she has ever been. At 8 the Egertons, who were dining out, dropped me in their carriage at the Curtis’ & we had a pleasant little dinner with them & the Franquevilles. I returned home in a cab.
