28 March 1908 — Rome
Saturday. 28th [March 1908]. I went out after breakfast to see Sophy Franqueville at Hotel de Londres & also to see Mrs Curtis at 20 Piazza di Spagna next door. Mr Curtis appeared in a long dressing gown—his early morning costume. I agreed to dine with him tomorrow to meet the Franquevilles. I returned to Sophie & remained talking to her till time to return to the Embassy for 12.30 lunch. At 2 drove out with Olga Egerton to see the Exercises of the Cavalry at Tor di Quinto. A most interesting exhibition of the cleverness of horses in getting down precipices, slopes & jumping walls & ditches. The King was there on horseback but spoke to no one– There were not very many onlookers & the day was grey & the compagnia did not look its best. The feats of the horses & their riders were truly remarkable. They rode down a deep slope of grass & after many smaller things finished by riding down sand cliff perfectly perpendicular—the horses sliding down on all fours. We came back before it was all over in order to avoid the dust on the road of the motor cars. Several people came to tea here– Amongst them Countess Guiccioli (the widow fm Constantinople). Several people dined here, Sir Hedworth Williamson & his brother the naval attaché & they amused us by recitings & singing Coon songs.
