27 March 1908 — Rome | |
Friday. 27th [March 1908]. I went out at 10.30 in the carriage with Sir Edwin & we went to the Grand Hotel to pick up Lord Durham & Lady Anne & we all drove to the Barracca museum to see the Greek & Egyptian sculpture there collected—there are also one or two nice pieces of Assyrian slabs. Then on to the Doria Palace—first round the public gallery & had a look of the Velasquez portrait of Leo X & then to the private apartment where the Prince Doria received us & showed his treasures. Sir Edwin & I came back alone to lunch at 1.30. Sophy had telephoned to ask me to drive with her wh I agreed to do. She telephoned again at 2.30 that she was coming at once so I got ready & went down to Olga’s sitting room & waited till past 4 when I gave up hope of her & took off my bonnet & prepared for the concert of Barjansky wh began at 5. Elsie Cassis came to it & we sat together. We sat on the raised bench at the end of the room under the music gallery & the sight from there was very pretty. Olga had left the furniture & flowers pretty well as usual & when the ladies in bright colours grouped themselves about the effect was excellent. People were pleased with the music & there were over 100 people present. Princess Tofka & I went to dine with Mr Whitaker (secy) at the Grand Hotel– Met Lady Kimberley & her son & daughter, Mr & Mrs Erskine, Lord Durham & sister & many others whose names I forget. We met in Mr W’s private sitting room but dined in the big dining room which was very full & a loud band played all the time. I sat between our host & Lord Durham. We took coffee in the outer hall—then returned to the private room where we found Olga who had come in from dining elsewhere with Sir E. There was a girl of 16 with a wonderful contralto voice who sang beautifully– An Italian who played the violin excruciatingly—a Mrs Seligmann who sang a passionate French song with the remains of a fine voice. The girl with the fine voice is a pupil of Me Nevada Palmer who it appears is here & her daughter Mignon is singing in the Barbiere on the stage. I shall be glad to see them all again. | |
