Thursday. 2nd [April 1908]. Went down to the garden & sat there– Mr Desgras the 1st secy came & sat for a little while & talked. He had just arrived from London. Mr Williamson the naval secy also sat a little while. It was a lovely bright morng only the wind cold in the shade. Sophy F. came & spent the morning with me in the garden. Da Laura Minghetti also came & Olga joined us a short time before lunch at wh Da Laura remained & we sat in the glazed porch of the staircase till near 3 o’cl—she & Olga & I. Abt 4.30 as the other had gone I walked off to see Mara Cassis who lives close by, then to Villa Bonaparte opposite our Embassy to see Mrs Akers Douglas there I met Mrs Curtis & then I went back to the Embassy & started again at 6 in the Embassy brougham to call on Countess Somaglia as that is her hour of reception– I wanted to apologise to her for not having gone to her last night as Fofka told me the old lady was rather offended at my not having gone– She was very amiable & friendly & promised to come & see me one morning in the garden. There were many other ladies coming & going among them Css Pasolini I met at the door just as I was leaving. A quiet evening only Mr Desgras & Mr & Mrs Akers Douglas at dinner & we retired early. Col. Delmé Ratcliffe who met me as I left Css Somaglia & accompanied me to the Embassy told me that there has been a row in the town today. | |
