1 April 1908 — Rome
Wednesday. 1st April [1908]. I went down to the garden abt 10.30. It was perfect weather– Sophy Franqueville joined me there & we walked about & climbed up on the walls but found the view much spoilt by new houses springing up all round. Lunch at 12.30 & at 2 I had a visit from Mr Bliss who was wonderfully well & lively. One eye has been successfully treated for cataract & the other will be done this summer. The Princess Jane San Faustino called on me & was anxious to know if she could get a villa on the Lido for the summer. I said I believe she could do so– After 5 o’cl tea I drove out in the Embassy victoria & went to Marchesa Cappelli’s “little afternoon.” The Cappellis live in the Palazzo Torlonia Bocca di Leone. Olga E. had to give up going as she had got a cold & lost her voice. I found a great crowd there & no one I knew. I sat a little while to listen to a lady singing who I found out to be the daughter of Bjornsen the Norwegian writer. She was not very young but had a fine voice. Mara Cappelli was very civil & introduced me to 2 or 3 people—but after ½ hour I managed to make my escape—& went on to see Da Laura Minghetti who is always to be found at 6 o’cl. I found Mme Pallavicini with her & 3 other ladies followed so I did not stay long & get home & rested a short time before dressing for dinner. Miss Hanbury & her brother (of Mortola) dined also some of the Embassy secs. & a Major                who I found out had been in India & we soon fell to talking over different places there & so had a good deal to talk about.
