9 April 1908 — Rome
Thursday. 9th [April 1908]. Helped Olga with arranging her laces. Donna Laura came to see us at 2 & sat with us also working. She was tired & looked more aged today. She told us how she, when young, went every year to Paris to stay with Mme Lessert who used to have skilled work girls to come to the house to teach them all kinds of work such as macramé fringes &c &c & that in that house she had learnt also to know all the great men of France of the time. Thiers, Guizot, Merioné &c. She left at 4 & then Fofka & I went out for an hour’s drive. We went to the Broadwoods & found only Miss Louise at home & spent a short time there. Then on to Via Piacenza where I went in to see old D. Jose Hurtado the widower of Mme Hurtado née Perry I had known so long. He is a fine old man of 83. Marquese Bentivoglio & his daughter live with him. He said he had been Minister of Columbia in different places since 1861! & has been in diplomacy 60 years. We then returned home to tea. Old Mrs Griscom came to see Olga. We had a quiet evening at home–
