8 April 1908 — Rome | |
Wednesday. 8th [April 1908]. I got up at 10 quite rested but rather enervée. Olga had also rested this morng & got up late. Miss Corkran (US) came to call on me & I looked out Cretan lace for her wh she wanted to buy of Olga. In afternoon I helped to arrange all her stock of lace & then Sophy Franqueville came to tea & afterwards took me in her carriage to call on Donna Laura Minghetti whom we found quite alone & she welcomed us warmly & was very entrain. She is a charming person & one forgets she is old & rather deaf & has cataract coming on her eyes. We told her how much we admired the genial way she has with every one & she said “The truth is that every one has his light & shade of character. The best way is to look for all the lights & not to dwell on the shadows & then you find eno’ to like & admire in every one.” She is very artistic & has the best taste possible so that her fine big salon is exquisitely arranged with fine things. The salon is one of the curiously big high ceilinged rooms wh one finds in old Roman houses & are so attractive. Ct Franqueville came to fetch Sophy away & left me alone with Da Laura & I left her soon after & went back to the Embassy just in time to dress for dinner. Sir Charles & Lady Fremantle dined. Sir Fred & Miss Milner took leave of us & went off to Florence by the train this evening at 11– Sir Edwin & Olga & I went to Queen Margherita’s at 10. She had Barjansky to play to her—& a few people to hear him. She said she counted on seeming me at Gressoney in July where we should be more “en intimité” than here & I was to spend a long time with her. | |
