23 April 1908 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 23rd [April 1908]. St. George’s Day. We went to church (we ladies) with the Bishop for the service at which he was to preach. He appeared in cape & mitre preceeded by a clergyman with a silver pastoral staff!! I am sorry to see these things becoming frequent. It is very much against my feelings to see the little church which Henry & I started here & gave to the English community turned to such uses. I am in the minority here so hold my tongue—but I feel it. As soon as we returned from the service a large party came to pay me a call consisting of Prince & Princess Bülow, his brother the Minister at Berne, Donna Laura Minghetti & Herr Flotow & Senatore Blaserna– The Bülows are staying at Hotel Britannia having come from Rome. The Chancellor is taking his Easter holiday in Italy. He seems well & cheerful tho’ I think he looks pale & fagged. He was much interested in the pictures in the house. The Princess & her mother (Da Laura) were jolly & affectionate & nice as usual. As soon as they left the house I gave the Bishop & Mrs Collins their lunch & sent them off to the station as the Bss went off by 3 o’cl train for Spain. His wife remained behind but went to an hotel here for a week to have a rest as she is worn out with travelling. It is a very fatiguing life that of the Bishop his diocese being so enormous. After dinner the Griscom family arrived to stay with me. Mr & Mrs Griscom, Miss Pansy Griscom & Mrs Bettle. I had to put Charlie Wyld in my dressing room & have Nellie to sleep in my bed to make room for such a large party. The Griscoms fill the whole of the ground floor apartment.
