1 May 1908 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 1st May [1908]. Mr Montalba came in the morning to do Hospital accounts with me & to explain them to Sir John Craggs who has kindly offered to take them away with him to London to put them in order. At 1 Seckendorff, Princess T&T & I went to lunch with P. & Pss Bülow at the Hotel Britannia where we also met the Sindaco (Count Grimani) otherwise this was only the Bülow party. We were shown up first to the sitting room & when the Prince appeared & lunch was announced he gave me his arm & conducted me downstairs to the private room in which his party has their meals. I sat between him & the Princess & both were very lively. I asked him if he knew Sir Felix Semon & he said he did not & then began to discuss as to whether he had been called in to consultation about the late Emperor Frederick. I thought that Seckendorff was the one who must know more about the subject than any of us but he did not say very much. I know that Sir Felix believes that the Emperor’s life was entirely sacrificed to the weakness of Sir Morell Mackenzie, he having emphasized this to me two days ago when walking in the Eden’s garden. Sir Felix believes that an operation would have saved the poor man’s life.
