3 July 1908 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Friday. 3rd [July 1908]. Nela left for her home by 11.20 train. I had a letter from young Mrs Curtis to say Mr & Mrs Curtis of Venice had arrived in London the day before yesterday & that the dear old gentleman had died peacefully the next morning with his wife holding his hand. This is a terrible thing. The dear old couple had never been parted & the only consolation is that she survives him as she was always the stronger mind & managed everything for him. I telephoned to the housemaid at 3 Savile Row to get a spray of lilies to lay on his coffin. It was an excessively hot day & the drought continues. Corise who has been at Roehampton staying at Cornelia’s new house Templeton arrived for luncheon bringing with her a Mr Minor Chapman who will be staying with her at the Cottage. He is to have a house near here & he & his wife are to go in for the French system of growing vegetables for the market– A Frenchman had been had over from France & arrived this morng via Southampton to talk over the plan & to be interviewed on the subject. I took a turn with Ivor in the afternoon & he seemed a little less confused. The Freddie Guests came over from Yarrells to dine here & Mr Mora the Agent also dined & after dinner we walked on the terrace.
