12 July 1908 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Sunday. 12th [July 1908]. I went to morning service with Cornelia. An excellent sermon from the Vicar Mr Fisher. After lunch I sat with Cornelia in the tent. She gave me a note she had written to Connie to make amends wh I am to take to town tomorrow– At 3 Mr Joyson Hicks M.P. arrived to stay here. We had tea out in the tent & then Cornelia & he started off to take a walk. It is the 1st visit he has made here since he fought Winston Churchill at the Manchester election & beat him. Ivor was very confused again today—very disturbed & eat very little. I joined him in his walk round the terrace, but could understand little that he said & after walking round the terrace 2 or 3 times with him I left him with his nurse & went to evening service. I miss Ivor more at church on Sunday eveng than any time—as he used never to miss going then. After the service I went to the lodge to pay a visit to Mr & Mrs Barnes who had been on the Estate as long as our family. Mrs Barnes’ sisters were in my mother’s service as nursery maid, cook &c &c. Old Mrs B. is 84 a pretty old lady. Mr B. was in his Sunday suit & clean shirt—a charming old fashioned pair. A nice daughter sat by them—the open Bible was on the table– The whole a picture of English country life. Got home just in time to dress for dinner.
