24 July 1908 — Carlsbad | |
Friday. 24th [July 1908]. We drove direct to Hotel Papp where I had written for rooms but on getting there found that there were none to be had & were told it would be difficult to find any as the season was at its height. However we got out at Papps & had lunch & a conference in wh it was decided that I should sit still while Baker & Eda sallied forth in search of lodgings. She had been recommended a house by a friend & there she went. The landlady had none to give but recommended her to try at Villa Farold close by. There she was very successful & came back abt 4 oclock to fetch me & the luggage. I was very pleased when I saw the large airy room with 2 beds she had secured at the Villa Farold for 165 k. a week. She had secured a room in a house opposite for Baker & we soon got settled in & sent my letter of introduction from Dr Luff to Dr Otto Kraus, unpacked & settled ourselves. It was very hot weather & Carlsbad is low tucked into a wooded valley & we were lucky in being lodged a good way up the hill. Dr Krause came abt 7 & gave his directions for the cure. I was to have 2 glasses of water & to get up & go down to the spring to get it at 7.30 a.m. To have mud baths & to do Swedish exercises. He looked at my stiff knee & declared that the hot air electric baths I had had in London last winter had slightly atrophied the muscles & that the right leg measured ½ inch less than the other. We were not able to get our meals at the Farold—but found that Villa Konig next door was a restaurant & there we went for meals wh was convenient. | |
