25 July 1908 — Carlsbad
Saturday. 25th [July 1908]. Eda had her first glass of water brought to her at 7 & we were out the next morning & were down at the Neubrunn at 7.30 where we found a most bewildering scene. Thousands of people were walking solemnly to & fro sipping water out of long glasses, while a band played under the great colonnade where the Springs are also rising & where girls dip the glasses & hand them full to the cure takers. An official stands in the middle of the road making people “keep to the right.” The most frequented springs are approached by solemn lines of people going on step by step in their turns to get their glasses filled. The variety of nationalities one saw was remarkable, Jews, Hungarians, priests, Americans & very few English, Polish Jews with their long coats & a ringlet over each ear—some people look ill, some had jaundice complexions, mostly were fat & the women had the fashionable outrageous hats covered with feathers or artificial flowers. I sent Baker to the spring to get my glass filled & then walked 2 & fro till I had consumed 2 glasses. Eda had to drink 2 glasses at another spring a little further on in the “Markt Platz.” When we had imbibed the proper quantity we drove off to the Kaiser Park & found most of the people had gone there to get breakfast in the garden. At 9 we got our prescribed meal—“Ein Tee, ein chocolate, 4 Eier & eine butter.” There was such a crowd there that it was not easy to find a table, however a damsel who waited very well gave us one & exhausted nature was at last revived. We returned to the town & at 10 oclock met Dr Kraus at the Kaiserbad where he had a consultation with the Dr Tyrnhaus of the Gymnasium as to the exercises I was to do. When they had settled this we were shown the Gymnasium wh was full of what looked like frantic females in dressing gowns doing every kind of contortion with every kind of machine & was told to join them the next morning. We lunched at the Königs villa & at 5 I went down to the Kurhaus to take my first mud bath. It is black & slightly liquid & hot & not unpleasant (28º). I stayed in but a short time & on ringing for the attendant she comes & pours clean water on you wh washes over the mud & you get into a bath of clear water next to the mud bath & get quite clean before you dress & return home. Before leaving Carlsbad I got to stay 30 minutes in the bath of 29º of heat. On returning home I went to bed for an hour—& then went out to dinner & to bed at 10. This is the history of the cure at this place.
