15 August 1908 — Carlsbad
Saturday. 15th August [1908]. when we left Carlsbad. I went by the 11 o’cl express which left for Munich. There was rather a rush at the station as there was only one through carriage. Happily I found Sigr Levi & his wife of Venice in the train & they having a reserved compartment gave me hospitality. I was sorry to leave Eda standing on the platform of the station as she was not to leave for London till 3.40 in the afternoon. I & Baker reached Munich just after 6. We put our hand luggage into the cloak room & then went out to the Kaiser Hotel opposite the station & dined. Abt 7 we took a walk in the town which was crowded with visitors to an Exhibition which is going on & there were numberless trams in every direction. It was dark before we got back to the station where we found the greatest crowd & confusion. The only waiting room was also a restaurant where were unsavory smells of eating & we could not make up our minds to sit there. At last we found another waiting room now turned for the occasion into an office where people can get recommendations for lodgings & there we sat in a corner. It was amusing to watch the different people who came to find lodgings & one wondered that so many should arrive in a strange place without having made provision for passing the night at that late hour—for it was 10.30 before we left to get into our train to pass the Brenner. It was a great comfort when once we were safely in the sleeping car & were able to lie down & sleep.
