16 August 1908 — En route to Venice
Sunday. 16th [August 1908]. After a pretty good night I woke soon after 7 to get some rather cold coffee brought in– We arrived at Verona at a little before nine & were there met by my servant Giuseppe. We expected to have only time to change trains for Milan, but found that we were too late for it. So we had lunch & sat & waited & heard the last news from home from Giuseppe—then went on to Milan by 12 train. There went to the Palace Hotel next the station—rested & went later for a walk with Baker. The quantities of trams rushing in every direction are very alarming to those on foot. Went early to bed & had a wretched night from the noise of the trans & carriages, trains, people passing till very late & beginning again very early. It is much warmer here than at Carlsbad.
