23 August 1908 — Castel Savoia, Gressoney St. Jean
Sunday. 23rd [August 1908]. While the Queen was gone to the village church with her household in a motor & the servants in the motor bus I went out for a walk. It was a lovely day quite cloudless– After lunch we sat till 3 in the verandah & then at half past reassembled to walk up the mountain in the park to get to the white chalet a good way up. It took us more than a hour as the Queen goes slowly up hill & stops frequently to get her breath. Prof. Giacosa amused her with jokes & stories & was very amusing. We had the usual accompaniment of 11 little dogs who were wild with delight & rushed up & down the hill. The little black lupetto when frightened or tired kept jumping up to the Queen’s chest in the hopes of remaining in her arms. When we reached our destination we found seats prepared looking down the valley & M. Rosa & our cloaks to put on so as to avoid catching cold. There was a battle royal between 2 of the smallest dogs– I having taken one on my lap another was jealous & tried to turn out the first– I got rid of them & they continued to fight– Mimi tried to separate them & got a bite wh happily was not skin deep. Tea was served in the hut wh is lined inside with cretonne & has homely wooden chairs & table. There is a little kitchen where the “staffiere” warmed the water for the tea. A cloudless day & lovely sunset colours on the mountain.
