8 September 1908 — Salce, Belluno
Tuesday. 8th [September 1908]. Same lovely host & same quiet life. After 4 o’cl tea Carrie & I drove over to Sedico Bribano to call on Canon & Mrs Ragg who are staying there at the Villa Pratt Hotel. It was an old villa & has been bought by a company & arranged for an hotel—beautifully situated—but there are very few people there. We met the Wiels also calling there. The Ragg baby, my godchild, from being the tiniest most miserable infant has grown a bonnie child. Going to Pratt we nearly had a carriage accident. One of the horses being bitten by a fly began to kick & kicked his leg over the pole. Our coachman quickly jumped down & held the horses’ heads & spoke reassuringly to them—& then took the pole out of the carriage & reharnessed the horses while Carrie stood at their heads & I stood by looking on. There was not a person in sight nor a house, where it happened & it was lucky we required no help & got off safely.
