23 September 1908 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 23rd [September 1908]. Did hospital accounts all the morning. Mr Ady arrived from Milan by lunch time. We went out after tea in gondola. I got out at Hotel d’Europa & the Adys went on to Sa Giorgio to see the sunset from the Campanile. By the way the Campanile of S. Marco is growing rapidly & seems to be already built up to where the belfry begins—so there is a hope we may see it finished. The scaffolding used is of a simple & curious kind. It is hoisted up as the tower grows higher & there is a covering on the top to protect the men & the work from the weather & is not at all unsightly. I found the Canon better but anxious to get away from the hotel & I arranged that he shall come to stay with me on Friday. I started to walk home & going thro’ the Piazza I said to myself, if I go to the Piazzetta I shall find the General de Horsey in his gondola & he will take me home—& on getting there sure enough he was at the Riva & was delighted to convey me. On getting to my door the Adys just came up so the girl & I took a little walk to the Frari & back. It was just the hour of Ave Maria & the church was merely lighted by the candles on the altars & the monotonous chanting of the monks in gloom was impressive. We sat there for a little while & then returned home.
