2 October 1908 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 2nd [October 1908]. I woke with a fearful headache & could not move from my bed. I had promised to fetch Princess Sophie at 10 & take her shopping—so I sent Canon Ragg to her to put the gondola at her disposal & to bring her afterwards here to lunch. She went with her friends the T & Taxis & they came here at 1. Lady Helen Vincent who had arrived at Venice last evening & is a friend of the Princess also lunched here & did the honors for me. Princess Sophie came up to see me before she left again to shop in the afternoon. She said she had had “a lovely lunch.” She was to sail for Greece this evening after dinner. The gondola went at 6 to the station to meet the newly appointed Italian Ambassador to Japan Marchese Guiccioli & his wife (née Beckendorff) who came to stay a few days with me en route for Vienna & Moscow to take the Trans Siberian railway to Vladivostock. The Canon entertained them for me. Sister Chaffey came to see me in the evening & I was a little better.
