26 October 1908 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 26th October [1908]. I left Venice by the morning train for Rome to pay a last visit to the Egertons before Sir Edwin leaves for good. I arrived there at 10.50. Travelled with Prof. D. Giordano the Venice surgeon & his wife. Was met by the Egerton’s carriage & driven to the Embassy. Found Css Pouschkine staying there (Olga’s aunt). I had rooms on the entresol very comfortable & a hearty welcome. It was still lovely weather & we generally spent the mornings sitting in the gardens with our work. The young men of the Chancery coming in & out from time to time to talk to us. There were often people asked to dine & nearly every night 2 or 3 of the English secretaries. One night they had Herr Caro, the German archoeologist at Athens—who spoke English perfectly & was very pleasant. The American Ambr & his wife (Griscom) dined & many others. All full of regrets at the departure of the Egertons on 1st Decr.
