5 November 1908 — Rome
Thursday. 5th November [1908]. Sir Edwin & Lady Egerton went with me to the station (Rome) to see me off by 1.30 train for Sicily. Marchesa Cassis met me & we travelled together in the sleeping car. At Naples our dinner was brought to us in the car wh we much preferred to eating a hasty meal at the station– On the way to Naples we passed the wreck of a luggage train which had collided yesterday afternoon with a passenger train. It was rather a horrible sight as one realized how easily a train may be broken to bits. One poor man had been killed & others badly wounded–
