8 November 1908 — Rizzolo, Francofonte
Sunday. 8th [November 1908]. We went out to see some of the distant orange gardens. There is one in a beautiful spot in a cleft of the hills. We got out of the carriage & walked down to where the torrent comes down & had rather an amusing walk, wading the water & having to follow down the course, on very stoney ways—till we got to another farm where the road came & we found the carriage. In the afternoon we drove to the lake made by Mr Eaton & followed the water course he had built to supply it for about a mile into the hills– A boy carried our tea basket & Elsie made tea under the shadow of a big stone– There was a scrub of wild olives, oleander, wild vines &c &c & in some places orange gardens– The views down to the valley of Lentini & up to Francofonte were lovely & would have been more so had Etna not been completely veiled. We got back to the house just at sunset. I received a letter from Myles to tell me there was a good steamer leaving Syracuse tomorrow for Malta & advising me to cross by it & not to stop at Syracuse. This I decided to do. Elsie said that it is well that we do not remain here after today as the provisions are nearly exhausted & there are no eggs left. The peasants live on black bread & herbs wh they gather in the fields. We had to send to Francofonte for white bread.
