9 November 1908 — Rizzolo, Francofonte
Monday. 9th [November 1908]. At 11 o’clock we started to drive back to Lentini. Cassis went with us in the victoria—& Baker took the bags in the carrozzella. On the road we drew up at the side & eat our lunch. We arrived in time for 1.8 train wh I took with Baker for Syracuse. The Cassis left for Messina. They never spend more than 3 or 4 days at Rizzolo twice a year—on account of the unhealthiness of the climate. The journey by the coast thro’ Augusta to Syracuse was lovely. I got there at 2.30 & drove to the Palace Hotel down on the quay. After getting some tea I ordered a carriage & a guide & drove off with Baker to see the remains of the Greek theatre & Roman amphitheatre & the old quarries all very interesting. We had just time to do this before the sunset when we drove back to the hotel to rest. I had a visit from the Consul (Long I think) who brought a telegram he had got from Myles Ponsonby to urge me to come on to Malta by the Rubattino steamer which left tonight & was much more comfortable than the usual “Carola” which carries the mails on every but Monday night. I told him I had decided to do this & we sat & had a long talk. He told me he has thought of building a house to be used as a nursing home. After dinner he returned to accompany me on board the steamer & we went at abt 10. I had a capital deck cabin & was glad to lie down & rest having had rather a tiring day.
