15 November 1908 — San Antonio Palace, Malta
Sunday. 15th November [1908]. We all drove in to Valletta & attended a military service conducted by Revd J. Blackbourne & he preached well. A regimental band assisted the organ & the choir sang well. After lunch the Duke showed me round all the gardens of San Antonio & the Public Gardens wh lead out of them. It was delightful to see the semi tropical things all in flower—the orange trees in fruit, the Palms with dates & the roses in full bloom. The Poinsettia trees are in bloom—& are a lovely sight. The Duke kindly promised me some different plants that I may try to grow them in Venice. Today was celebrated the Pope’s jubilee 50 years since he said his first mass– The Archbishop invited the Duke to attend the great ceremony but H.R.H. having telegraphed home to the King to ask for orders was answered that he was not to go.
