24 November 1908 — San Antonio Palace, Malta
Tuesday. 24th [November 1908]. An answer came from dear Queen Margherita this morning “My most hearty thanks & loving thoughts for you”– It blew hard & was rainy—thundered, hail &c. It cleared after lunch—the rest of the party went to Marsa to play golf. I took exercise & walked round the public gardens here—4 times round it took just one hour. We all went to dine with the Govr & Lady Grant in Valletta—an official dinner. He lives in a fine house—the Auberge Arragon. A Maltese nobleman Marchese took me in to dinner & I sat next the Govr. We sat at a huge round table. Rather bad dinner. My neighbour was interesting. He commanded a Maltese Regt at the Diamond Jubilee & was enthusiastic over their reception in England & altogether admired the country, climate &c. His regt lined the streets close to St Paul’s so he was close to the Queen when she got there. He said to his men “If you could sell your present place you could get hundreds sterling for it—see how well you are placed.” After dinner I made acquaintance with Col. & Mrs Leverson. He is a great friend of Arthur Layard’s & talked much of him. She is a relation of Isabel Layards—so I find a link wherever I go in the world.
